It's been six seasons since Lovie Smith last was a head coach in the NFL. The 63-year-old had stints with the Chicago Bears (2004 to 2012) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014-15) but hasn't found himself in the role since then.

However, that drought could come to an end soon. NFL insiders reported on Monday that the Houston Texans could wind up naming Smith as their new head coach.

Texans Head Coach 2022

Smith isn't a stranger to the Texans organization. He just spent the 2021 NFL season as the team's associate head coach and defensive coordinator, so it makes sense that they're leaning toward someone that they're familiar with.

Houston struggled this season, going 4-13 across the 17-game schedule. Smith guided the Texans to the sixth-worst scoring defense in the league, so it'll be interesting to see what he can do if he's given full control.

Keeping that in mind, Smith has accomplished a lot as a head coach in the past. He was named the 2005 NFL Coach of the Year and guided the Bears to a Super Bowl XLI appearance in the following season.

Smith's overall 89-87 coaching record may not look too impressive until you consider that he was 81-63 (.563) before coaching the Buccaneers. If he can be the coach that he was in Chicago, the Texans could be on the upswing in 2022.
