This season will likely be an uphill battle for the Detroit Lions after several key departures. There's major questions surrounding the offense, from how Jared Goff will perform as the new QB1 to which receivers will step up from a group that looks lackluster.

And now the offensive unit will be without a key presence to start the year.

Taylor Decker Injury

Starting left tackle Taylor Decker has suffered a hand injury and will be "down for a bit," according to head coach Dan Campbell. He's out for at least Week 1, and surgery being a possibility means he may be on the shelf for even longer.

This is a huge blow for an offensive line that relied on Decker as the anchor. He received career-high grades overall (82.0) and in pass blocking (85.8) last season from ProFootballFocus. Now Goff will begin his tenure without a lynchpin protecting him against a terrifying San Francisco 49ers defense that's finally healthy again.

Rookie Penei Sewell could suddenly slide over to take Taylor's place at left tackle after spending the offseason learning right tackle. Regardless, beginning the year without Taylor is far from ideal for an offense that may struggle in 2021.

The 49ers are heavy 8.5-point favorites heading into Week 1, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
