The San Francisco 49ers are faced with a major question at quarterback once again after losing fill-in starter Jimmy Garoppolo to a foot injury. One potential answer is Baker Mayfield, who was released by the Carolina Panthers on Monday and could be claimed by the 49ers on waivers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has discussed his team's interest in the former No. 1 overall pick.
Shanahan admitted "we look into everything" and he's "always been a fan" of Mayfield. However, he also said he feels "real good about our players" and "with where we're at right now."
Shanahan's comments don't exactly provide any clarity on how San Francisco could approach this situation. It's no surprise considering how tight-lipped the Niners' organization is, but it now creates plenty of intrigue regarding Mayfield's next landing spot.
Rookie Brock Purdy was surprisingly solid in relief of Garoppolo on Sunday, giving Shanahan one possible option for the rest of the year. The 49ers also signed journeyman Josh Johnson this week in order to provide a capable veteran option, so it's not like this team has a gaping hole at backup.
Still, Mayfield has shown flashes of being a top quarterback, and that potential may be too much to pass up. Shanhan's reputation as a QB whisperer could also help unlock a new level in 27-year-old.
Mayfield will clear waivers at 4 p.m. ET if he goes unclaimed, so all eyes will be on San Francisco until his new team is revealed.
