Justin Herbert's brutal rib injury during Week 2's Thursday Night Football clash with the Chiefs sent fantasy managers home with obvious concern. A quick look at the clip of him spiking the ball down because of his obvious pain created a flurry of question marks heading into Week 3.
Fortunately, Herbert's had more than a week to rest from his fractured rib cartilage. But fantasy managers are eager to know if he'll be good enough to suit up against the Jaguars on Sunday.
Justin Herbert Injury Update
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported nothing but good news regarding Herbert's status on Friday morning. The gunslinger logged another limited practice on Thursday, but was seen running, in pads and making throws. This was on the heels of him throwing Tuesday and logging another limited practice on Wednesday.
Will Justin Herbert Play Week 3?
According to Rapoport, "if he continues to progress, I would expect him out on the field on Sunday." And, as of Wednesday, head coach Brandon Staley indicated Herbert is officially "day-to-day" with this injury.
It looks like this will be a situation of pain management. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to Herbert's practice designation. If he's able to log another limited, or even full participation, then we have enough confidence to throw him in the starting lineup.
It might also be wise to add a potential streaming QB backup, in case there's any unexpected news coming out before Sunday.
Justin Herbert Fantasy Outlook
If Herbert does play, he's in line for a big fantasy week. Despite ranking third in Football Outsiders' pass-defense DVOA metric, the Jacksonville Jaguars are allowing the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing QBs, and the 10th-most PPR points to opposing wideouts.
Carson Wentz torched the Jags for 313 passing yards and 4 TDs in Week 1. The defense looked much better against Matt Ryan and the Colts in Week 2, but it's hard to put any stock in Indianapolis' offense right now.
Herbert currently ranks as QB2 in The Duel's Week 3 PPR rankings.
