The Cleveland Browns aren't playing for much more than pride and draft position in Week 18. Some players, though, are going out and competing for their next contract. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney would have been one of those players until his comments earlier this week.
When asked about his future as a Brown, Clowney gave a very unfavorable and unwarranted response, claiming publicly to reporters there was a 95% chance he would not return to Cleveland next season.
Jadeveon Clowney News
These comments got him excused from practice the following day and now have him sitting out Week 18. Sure, Clowney will technically be classified on the injury report, but it's clear why the veteran defender won't be out there.
Clowney hasn't exactly built a reputation of being the easiest guy to work with, and this is just another example. Do guys have the right to be upset about their situation, or voice their concerns about or to the franchise and/or their teammates? Of course, they do. That does not absolve them of potential consequences, though. Clowney found that out this week.
You can't expect to trash your employer publicly and expect them to react favorably. The Browns are doing what they should and need to do.
Clowney will head into free agency looking for a new team, trying to negotiate a new contract, an area he's struggled with multiple times in the past. For a former No. 1 pick who has never really lived up to the hype, never recording a double-digit sack season in his NFL career, he might need to take a long look in the mirror this offseason if he still expects to be paid like a top defensive end by a competent franchise.
Good luck to him. The Browns have already added themselves to the list of teams that think they're better off without Clowney.
