Update (Thursday, Sept. 9): It's feared that Edwards suffered a season-ending ACL tear at practice on Thursday. This story was written on Wednesday prior to that injury.

The Baltimore Ravens made a move to address their running back depth issues by signing veteran Le'Veon Bell to their practice squad. Fantasy managers are patiently waiting to see the impact this has on starter Gus Edwards.

For now, Edwards' fantasy outlook holds steady heading into Week 1.

Gus Edwards Fantasy Outlook

Edwards remains the player expected to benefit most from the knee injury suffered by J.K. Dobbins during the preseason. The fourth-year pro has racked up at least 700 rushing yards in each of his first three NFL seasons. Edwards has also played in all 32 regular season games since the start of 2019.

The addition of Bell shouldn't scare fantasy managers away from sliding Edwards into the starting lineup on a weekly basis. Bell has averaged just 3.4 yards per carry over the last two seasons. He won't be an immediate factor on offense and acts as an insurance option in case someone else goes down. If anyone gets a significant downgrade from the signing, it's Ty'Son Williams.

The upside that Edwards comes with is capped given his receiving role has been nonexistent with quarterback Lamar Jackson at the helm (18 career catches). In fact, the Ravens have targeted the running back position less than 55 times in the passing attack in each of the last two seasons.

Heading into Week 1, Edwards is a reliable RB2 and is in line to see double-digit carries. There is a reason the 26-year-old averages 5.2 yards per carry in his career. Edwards is an efficient ground-and-pound running back capable of breaking tackles and fighting for yards up the middle.

Edwards checks in at RB17 in The Duel's Week 1 fantasy football rankings.
