Heading into the 2021 fantasy football season, New York Giants tight end Evan Engram holds some promising potential as a starting TE on fantasy rosters. However, recent news around his calf injury and a possible trip to the injured reserve leaves a clouded outlook, at least for the early start to the season.

Evan Engram Injury Update

Reports suggest that the Giants are weighing an option of placing Engram on the IR prior to Week 1 kickoff. While New York continues to weigh its option, fantasy managers still realize the possibility of Engram likely missing multiple games to start the season.

Evan Engram Fantasy Outlook

Despite going off the board with an average draft position (ADP) of TE16, according to FantasyPros, Engram had the upside to be a viable starter prior to the injury.

During the preseason, head coach Joe Judge hinted at Engram seeing heavy usage in the Giants offense in 2021. After all, he's fresh off his first-ever Pro Bowl appearance and led the Giants in targets (109) as quarterback Daniel Jones' favorite receiving option in 2020. Drops were an issue, but Engram still converted those 109 targets into 63 receptions for 654 yards and 1 touchdown.

Heading into drafts, fantasy managers must be aware of Engram's injury. At this point you can't draft him as your top tight end option, leaving him as a backup option in deep leagues, or someone you should just keep a close eye on as a potential waiver wire pickup as his health improves.

Engram was ranked as TE14 on The Duel's preseason fantasy football rankings.
