Cincinnati is not the team many NFL fans expected to see represent the AFC conference in Super Bowl 56. The Bengals just keep finding a way to win, though. They play the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night and will have to play step up in pass defense against what is a loaded wide receiver group.

No matter what, cornerback Eli Apple is going to have his work cut out for him. Covering Cooper Kupp, Odell Beckham Jr. or Van Jefferson is going to be tough. However, a shutdown performance from the outspoken ballhawk could allow him to sneak away with the Super Bowl MVP Award.

FanDuel Sportsbook lists Apple at +30000 to win the award, which understandably makes him a long shot option. He has shown he isn't afraid to make the big play, though. Apple stopped WR Tyreek Hill at the one-yard line during the AFC Championship, giving all the momentum to Cincinnati at the half.

He also dropped a likely game-ending pick-six in overtime. That may seem like a negative thing, but it proves that Apple has been in the right place at the right time as of late. For a player that has continually been called a bust over the years, he put together the best season of his career in 2021.

The Bengals signed Apple in free agency as a backup, but he was forced into action after Trae Waynes suffered an injury. The 26-year-old never looked back and logged 49 tackles (2 for loss), 10 pass breakups and 2 interceptions across 16 games played.

Has a Cornerback Ever Won Super Bowl MVP?

Past Super Bowls have shown that it is difficult for cornerbacks to make an impact worthy of being named MVP. In fact, only on player at the position have ever earned the honors. Larry Brown of the Dallas Cowboys accomplished the feat in 1996 thanks to his two interceptions in the second half.

The Rams are going to look to pass the ball all day long against this Cincinnati defense. If Apple can lock down his matchup or cause a turnover, his chances of winning the award jump tremendously.
