The Miami Dolphins are hoping to pull off a quick rebuild, after signing numerous big contracts in free agency and having a league-high 14 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. After being a team accused of tanking early last season, it's clear that there are needs all over the board for Miami. However, the biggest need on this team to turn the franchise around is at quarterback.
All season long, the motto on social media for the Dolphins was "Tank for Tua," with the hopes of drafting Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with an early draft pick. With the No. 5 overall pick, they seem to be in position to do so, however, the NFL Draft odds point to them draft Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
After the most recent update, the Dolphins are the favorites to draft either one of the two quarterbacks. The odds they're getting on each are very different, however. They are -125 favorites to draft Herbert, compared to just +150 to draft Tua. That's an implied difference of over 15 percentage points. With the concern of Tua's injury history being an issue down the road, the former Heisman candidate's draft stock has been falling a bit.
While Herbert has not been as talked about as Tua, he is still a terrific player to draft at No. 5. Returning for his senior year at Oregon, he improved upon all of his stats. He completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in his final year. He also showcased his athleticism in the Rose Bowl, rushing for 3 touchdowns.
It appears Miami is almost certainly going quarterback with their first draft pick, but the question of who will be taking snaps for the Dolphins in 2020 is still very much up in the air.
