Diontae Johnson was one of the most-hyped sleeper options in fantasy football this year. Some of that hype has been derailed by a mysterious foot injury, which caused him to miss practice on Thursday.
While that put his Week 1 status in jeopardy, Johnson did manage to get in a full practice on Friday, which should put him on track to play on Monday Night Football.
Diontae Johnson Fantasy Football Outlook
Johnson has a really good matchup in Week 1. He's facing a New York Giants' defense that ranked No. 30 overall in Football Outsiders' pass defense DVOA metrics. Despite the juicy matchup, though, Johnson is a risky option this week.
While he's pretty much unquestionably the second-most talented receiver on the team, he's not a surefire bet to win the No. 2 job. He'll be competing with James Washington, the rookie Chase Claypool and tight end Eric Ebron. Plus, he missed time in training camp already, which certainly didn't help him establish himself in the team's pecking order.
It definitely seems like he'll play in Week 1, but the chance that Pittsburgh elects to limit his snap count or bring him along slowly does make him a high-variance option.
Johnson's talent and the great matchup give him a really high ceiling in Week 1, though his floor is as low as it gets.
