Few players generated more buzz than Diontae Johnson did this offseason. But fantasy managers who spent a mid-round pick on the second-year wideout couldn't have loved what they saw in the first half last night. Facing a beatable New York Giants secondary, Johnson muffed a punt and was held to 2 yards in the first two quarters.
Though he finished the day with just 57 yards, Johnson flashed serious WR1 potential in the second half. He has a real shot to post a massive breakout campaign in 2020.
Diontae Johnson Fantasy Football Outlook
While JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington scored all 3 touchdowns, Johnson was clearly Ben Roethlisberger's favorite target. Johnson posted a stellar 32.3 percent target share, outpacing both JuJu (19.4 percent) and Washington (9.7 percent).
In fact, Johnson's 10 targets were more than JuJu (6) and Washington (3) saw combined. Those 10 targets tied Johnson for the eighth-highest total in the league in Week 1.
There was some debate as to whether or not Johnson could actually grab hold of the team's No. 2 receiver position. But that debate has been put to bed. If Week 1 is any indication, it seems as if JuJu and Johnson could be vying for the No. 1 role in this passing game all year long.
Faced with a tougher matchup in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos, Johnson checks in at WR28 in our Week 2 PPR rankings. But his season-long outlook includes some legitimate breakout potential if he keeps seeing volume like this.
