Running back Saquon Barkley has a stranglehold on the starting job for the New York Giants, but he has already built up an injury history during his young career. Backup Devontae Booker looks poised to earn the No. 2 role in the backfield and is a reliable handcuff option in fantasy football leagues.
Booker played the entire first quarter of the Giants' preseason game on Saturday. That means he is likely seen as the top backup right now ahead of Corey Clement. His ability to make an impact is the passing attack and consistently fill in when needed gives him some upside in PPR leagues.
Devontae Booker Fantasy Outlook
The 29-year-old is coming off of a year in which he racked up 507 yards from scrimmage to go along with 3 touchdowns as the handcuff to Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs. Overall, Booker averages 4.0 yards per carry in his five-year career and owns a catch percentage of 74.4%.
The Giants showed a level of commitment by shelling out $5.5 million in order to sign Booker in free agency this past offseason. The team may be forced to ease Barkley into action coming off a torn ACL, which means Booker could see increased snaps at the beginning of the regular season as well.
Booker's standalone role doesn't come with FLEX value, but he does rank among the top handcuffs in the league as Barkley has missed a combined 17 games over the last two seasons. He is not a bad option to consider rather than selecting bye-week-filler type players in the later rounds of the draft.
FantasyPros' average draft position data shows Booker is being drafted No. 228 overall and No. 65 among RBs in PPR leagues. That is a cheap price to pay for an insurance option on a Giants' offense that rushed for 4.4 yards per carry last season (T-No. 13 in NFL). He remains a name to keep an eye on.
