We are now less than a week away from finding out which college football player will take home the prestigious Hesiman Trophy. Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith could make history as one of the few wideouts to ever win the award, but others are hoping to snag the hardware as well.
Smith looks in prime position to win the award. After becoming the surprise favorite a little over a week ago, his position remains steady with the ceremony approaching on Jan. 5. Thecurrent Heisman odds at FanDuel Sportsbook favor Smith to win the 2020 Heisman Trophy.
Smith (-240) is the frontrunner for the Heisman over his teammate, quarterback Mac Jones (+210). Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence (+750) and Florida QB Kyle Trask (+4300) round out the odds as the selected participants for this year's Heisman ceremony.
Since 2000, quarterbacks have won the Heisman 17 times. Should Smith win, he'll become just the third wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy, following in the footsteps of Notre Dame's Tim Brown (1987) and Michigan's Desmond Howard (1991).
Smith turned 98 catches into 1,511 yards and 17 touchdowns as Alabama's star receiver this season, while Jones has racked up 3,739 yards and 32 touchdowns. Both players helped the Crimson Tide to an undefeated season and are big reasons why they're favorites to win the College Football Playoff Championship.
It's been quite a season for both Smith and Jones, and we'll see if either Alabama player can bring home the award next week.
