After being the last team in the NFL with a coaching vacancy, the Houston Texans have finally agreed to a deal with David Culley to be their next head coach. Culley comes to Houston after spending his 20-plus-year NFL career as a wide receivers and assistant coach.

The hiring of Culley isn't the kind of move that should invigorate the fan base. Instead, it showcases how desperate the team was to find someone willing to take on this undesirable role.

Culley isn't destined for failure just because he didn't have previous coordinator experience, but it would help. Other hot candidates in this coaching cycle like Brian Daboll, Arthur Smith and Eric Bieniemy were all offensive coordinators that would be exciting talents to trust the offense with.

Culley's prior stops don't instill the most confidence about how the Texans will fare under his watch, though.

It's clear that the team's very public drama with quarterback Deshaun Watson hurt their coaching search, turning the job from possibly intriguing to a wasteland with Watson likely headed out of the door via trade.

Hiring a coach like Culley with few of the normal head coaching credentials is likely the organization putting someone in place who won't make power plays like former coach/GM Bill O'Brien.

Culley has been touted for his character and coaching skills, so perhaps he's the best candidate who was available to lead Houston as they head into a rebuild.
