When healthy, Deebo Samuel is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the NFL. However, it is hard to overlook his injury history and the instability of the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation.
These things combine to paint an uncertain future for Samuel in fantasy football leagues this season.
Deebo Samuel Fantasy Outlook
Samuel burst onto the NFL scene during his rookie season in 2019 racking up 916 yards from scrimmage and 6 touchdowns on a total of 71 touches. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old suffered a number of injuries that derailed his 2020 season and didn't give him a chance to repeat his success.
The 49ers wideout ended up missing a nine games last year due to a foot fracture, a groin strain and a hamstring strain. While that doesn't guarantee he will get hurt once again, Samuel's likelihood is higher than a lot of other players. He is reportedly already dealing with a glute issue in training camp.
Other than his injury history, Samuel finds himself stuck in a role that lacks upside from a fantasy football perspective. His production comes mostly from yards after the catch given his average depth of target (ADOT) in 2020 was 2.2 yards. Samuel sees a lot of his targets from at or behind the line of scrimmage.
Given the emergence of second-year wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, it's possible that Samuel is as low as No. 3 in the pecking order behind tight end George Kittle. The 49ers' quarterback situation doesn't provide much upside either as the team has yet to commit to Jimmy Garoppolo or rookie Trey Lance.
Deebo Samuel ADP
All things considered, Samuel is a boom-or-bust WR option in 2021 and comes with a lot of risk on draft day. His fantasy floor seems to be much lower than his ceiling is high. Samuel's average draft position is No. 86 overall and No. 37 among WRs in PPR leagues, according to FantasyPros.
He checks in at WR33 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings.
