The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a tricky spot leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft. Star wide receiver Deebo Samuel has made it clear he wants out, but the team is reportedly hoping to keep him around, leaving the two sides at a standstill.
The approaching draft means a decision will need to be made quickly, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Deebo Samuel Trade News
Rapoport told the Pat McAfee Show "if someone's gonna trade for Deebo Samuel, it's gonna happen before Thursday." This timeline makes sense, given the 49ers will need to look for a replacement in the draft if Samuel is dealt, and Thursday's first round is projected to have several of this year's top pass-catchers hear their names called.
Working on a strict deadline certainly puts pressure on San Francisco to speed up its decision. The team would miss out on the top WRs in this year's class if they delay a trade, but it could also take time to win Samuel over again. There's also no guarantee whoever they draft will turn out to be a first team All-Pro like the former No. 36 overall pick.
The 49ers' brass will have offers to consider before the first round begins at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday. If there's no deal by then, it could be a big hint at San Francisco trying to reconcile with its star playmaker.
