When the Houston Texans selected Davis Mills in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, people viewed him as a project, but in time a potential successor at quarterback in Houston. Fate didn't give Mills much time to be a project though, as he was thrust into that starter role just three weeks into his first NFL season following an injury to Tyrod Taylor.
Mills and the Texans suffered a 24-9 loss to the Carolina Panthers in their Week 3 game. While the score isn't what Mills and the Texans were hoping for, he didn't necessarily play as bad as you may think.
Mills was 19-for-28 with 168 yards and 1 touchdown, good enough for a 95.5 passer rating. When Mills was asked about his performance in his first NFL start, he gave a very simple and honest answer.
"It's never as bad as you think it was and it's never as good as you think it was"- Davis Mills
It's great a perspective to have for a young quarterback and shows he has the right mentality at a young age. He's hoping this will be the first of many starts in his NFL career. On a Texans team with low expectations, Mills should be given plenty of room to continue to learn and grow.
