David Montgomery's season-long fantasy outlook took a huge hit when he suffered a groin injury during training camp in late August.
Recent reports have been far more optimistic about his health, and he might even suit up in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. Even if he plays, however, his Week 1 fantasy outlook leaves a lot to be desired.
To start with, the Lions quietly defend the run reasonably well. They ranked 23rd in Football Outsiders' defensive DVOA rankings last year, but that came with a No. 28 rank against the pass and No. 16 rank against the run.
A fully healthy Montgomery figures to be heavily involved in the rushing attack, but the presence of Tarik Cohen will severely limit his receiving work. That means he'll be up against the Lions' strength.
Of course, even if he plays, we're not going to be getting a fully healthy Montgomery either.
Even if he does play, Montgomery doesn't crack the top 36 running backs in our Week 1 fantasy football rankings.
David Montgomery Update
Montgomery was a full participant at Bears practice on Thursday. Practicing in full (as opposed to getting in a limited session) is a significant upgrade to his outlook in Week 1. He's still a low end RB option, but assuming updates remain positive through Sunday, he is a startable option if you're in a pinch.
