Indianapolis Colts rookie Kwity Paye was the second-highest edge rusher drafted in the 2021 NFL Draft after the Colts selected him at No. 21 overall. It's common for first-round draft picks to enter the league with serious expectations and Paye is not excluded from that group.

Well, the early teammate reviews for Paye are in and four-year Colts veteran Darius Leonard has offered up some high praise for his new rookie edge rusher from the Michigan Wolverines.

Leonard had this to say of the newest Colts rookie.

“Watching [Paye] play, he’s everything that we need. That motor. That meanness. That toughness. He’s a very humble guy."

Colts fans are likely thrilled to hear this first review from their budding star linebacker, who has done nothing but succeed since entering the league in 2018. Since then, Leonard owns a pair of Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections in addition to the 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Leonard went on to compare Paye to one of his newest teammates, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Buckner came over to the Colts via trade ahead of the 2020 campaign and earned First Team All-Pro honors after putting together a season with 58 total tackles (37 solo), 26 QB hits, 10 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.

“I like to refer to him as a DeForest Buckner. He’s quiet, but once he steps on the field, he has that switch and that drive to him," said Leonard. Now, this comparison is more about the two personas, especially considering Paye and Buckner operate in different roles on the defensive line.

Still, it's a great sign to have Paye given such high praise and comparison to two of the best defenders on Indianapolis' roster. In Paye's last full season at Michigan in 2019, he recorded 12.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 50 total tackles in 12 games.
