The Chicago Bears nabbed the consensus top tight end in the 2020 NFL Draft, using the No. 43 overall selection on Notre Dame's Cole Kmet. Though Kmet has big-time potential in the long run, he could struggle to contribute in 2020, making him an unreliable fantasy option next season.

Cole Kmet Fantasy Football Value

For starters, Kmet will almost certainly be playing behind tight end Jimmy Graham, who the Bears signed in free agency this offseason. At best, he'll be the third option in a passing game (also behind Allen Robinson) that averaged the eighth-fewest passing yards per game last season. That doesn't lend itself to fantasy production.

To make matters worse, tight ends have historically struggled to contribute in their rookie season. In fact, there have only been four tight ends in NFL history that have tallied at least 800 receiving yards as a rookie, and no one has done it since Jeremy Shockey in 2002.

None of this is to say that Kmet won't be a good player, though. The 21-year-old is coming off a 515-yard, 6-touchdown campaign as a junior, and he tested out really well at the NFL Combine. Among tight ends, Kmet posted a top-five result in the 40-yard dash (4.70), the vertical jump (37.0 inches) and the broad jump (123.0 inches).

Kmet clearly has long-term upside, but don't expect him to be a fantasy contributor as a rookie. The Notre Dame product didn't crack the top 24 in our post-draft rookie dynasty rankings.
