It's fair to say that Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire failed to live up to some lofty expectations during his rookie season. The 2020 first-round pick finished with 1,100 yards from scrimmage, but scored just 5 total touchdowns and ranked as the No. 22 RB in PPR scoring.

There is a lot to like about the 22-year-old heading into the fall, though.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire Fantasy Outlook

Drafting the starting running back of one of the best offenses in the NFL is never a bad idea. Edwards-Helaire is being taken late in the second round of many fantasy football drafts and could end up being a steal. He has an average draft position of No. 14 amongst RBs in PPR leagues, according to FantasyPros.

Edwards-Helaire's production will simply come down to the workload he receives. The second-year ball-carrier averaged 4.4 yards per carry last season, but only saw more than 14 carries in five of his 13 games played. His usage was unpredictable and should be solidified in his second go around.

Head coach Andy Reid may be forced to lean on the running game more than usual this season after quarterback Patrick Mahomes battled a few injuries in 2020. the Chiefs also revamped the offensive line this offseason by signing veteran Joe Thuney and trading for Pro Bowler Orlando Brown.

All the signs point to a breakout season from Edwards-Helaire. The only depth behind him in the backfield are longtime backups Darrel Williams and Jerick McKinnon. He also presents a lot of upside from a receiving point of view given he saw 54 targets last season and ended up with 36 catches.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire ADP

All things considered, the Chiefs were the sixth-highest scoring offense in the NFL last season (28.5 points per game) and Edwards-Helaire could spend a lot of time down near the end zone.

Don't be surprised if Edwards-Helaire becomes a top-five RB in fantasy football by the end of the season. He checks in at RB11 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings.
