Running back Christian McCaffrey looked phenomenal in his first two games of the 2021 season. He was on track to put together another solid performance on Thursday night football before he went to the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Unfortunately, his latest injury update isn't great news.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that McCaffrey is expected to miss a few weeks of action. The team is still doing tests on his hamstring, but it looks like he will not need to be place on injured reserve. This news causes the fantasy outlook of backup Chuba Hubbard to explode.
Chuba Hubbard Fantasy Outlook
Hubbard was not a very popular name in redraft fantasy football leagues heading into the season given he presented little value outside of being a handcuff. That is definitely no longer the case. The 2021 fourth-round pick is now expected to take on the majority of the carries over the next few games.
The Panthers have quietly turned into a run-heavy team as they average 31.0 rush attempts per game in 2021. That is the third-highest mark in the NFL. That spells good news for Hubbard, who averaged 5.9 yards per carry and racked up 36 total touchdowns across three college seasons.
Keep in mind that McCaffrey only appeared in three games for Carolina during the 2020 season. Backup Mike Davis was called upon to take over starting Week 3 and ended up finishing as the RB8 in PPR scoring leagues from that point on. More importantly, Davis saw a workhorse role averaging 17.4 touches during his 12 starts.
Hubbard is a lock to see double-digit touches moving forward. He carried the ball 11 times in Week 2 for 52 yards and also hauled in 3 of his 5 targets for 27 yards. His ability to make an impact all over the field will make him a fantasy football force, especially in PPR scoring leagues.
The upside Hubbard comes with makes him the No. 1 player to target on the waiver wire next week. The 22-year-old slides into RB2 territory until McCaffrey is able to return.
