The Kansas City Chiefs' 2021 NFL season experience was bittersweet. While playing in four consecutive AFC Championship Games is nothing to sneeze at, their Super Bowl appearance streak came to an end at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals.

There's clearly some work that needs to be done if the Chiefs want to continue being viewed as contenders in the 2022 NFL season. The good news for Kansas City fans is that their team is already being viewed in that light judging by ESPN's early NFL Power Rankings for next season.

Chiefs Power Ranking

ESPN is currently ranking the Chiefs as the best team in the league in their early 2022 power rankings. That's pretty high praise for a team that didn't even play in Super Bowl LVI.

Despite any shortcomings last season, the Chiefs still had a lot to be proud of. They had one of the best offenses in the league, averaging 29.4 points per game (No. 4). That's what happens when you have a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes under center, who threw for over 4,800 yards and 37 touchdowns (to 13 interceptions).

Of course, Mahomes would be incomplete without his top pass-catching options. Speedy veteran wideout Tyreek Hill paced all Chiefs players with 111 receptions and 1,239 receiving yards while tying with Travis Kelce for the team lead with nine receiving TDs. Speaking of Kelce, he had 92 receptions en route to his sixth straight 1,000-yard campaign.

One thing that Kansas City needs to improve on is its defense. While the Chiefs had one of the best defensive units in the second half of the regular season, things fell apart over their last five games (including playoffs), where they allowed 28.4 PPG.

Prioritizing defensive improvements will be key for the Chiefs this offseason. They'll have about $3.7 million to spend in free agency and 10 2022 NFL Draft picks to use in April to help turn things around.

The Chiefs have +750 odds (No. 2) to win Super Bowl LVII, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
