Cardinals Open as Ridiculous Road Underdogs Against 49ers in Week 1

As NFC West rivals, the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers have seen each other a lot, playing 51 times in their history, with the Niners leading the all-time series 31-26.

Despite the two teams finishing with very different records last season, the games were close, with the 49ers winning both meetings. While the 49ers may be the reigning NFC champs, San Francisco has opened as a surprisingly heavy 8.5-point home favorite over the Cardinals.

The NFC West rivals finished on opposite ends of the division last season. The 49ers won the division, with a 13-3 record, while the Cardinals finished last, with a 5-10-1 record.

San Francisco's season ended on a sour note, losing in the Super Bowl, but the Niners are essentially running it back with the same cast, hoping to get over the hump.

The Cardinals added to their air raid-style offense this offseason, highlighted by the big trade that send David Johnson in favor of DeAndre Hopkins. They added talent on both sides of the line, as well as a versatile defensive playmaker in Isaiah Simmons in the draft.

While there will be plenty of changes in the NFL odds before the season actually begins, it is unlikely that this game swings much, with the 49ers being among the clear Super Bowl contenders entering this season. Starting this season off with a home win will put them on the right path right out the gates.
