Just a few days ahead of the 2022 MLB postseason, the St. Louis Cardinals are gearing up for a deep run in October. St. Louis already locked up the NL Central title and lines up for a Wild Card series against the Philadelphia Phillies based on the current playoff standings.

Although St. Louis is heavily focused on postseason baseball, that didn't stop the team from taking care of an important contract extension.

On Monday, the Cardinals locked up top relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos to a two-year extension.

The full details of Gallegos' extension surfaced on Tuesday morning. It's a two-year deal worth $11 million guaranteed. This includes a $500K signing bonus, and salaries of $4.5 million and $5.5 million in 2023 and 2024. The club also has an option on his final arbitration-eligible year in 2025, worth $6.5 million.

St. Louis was keen on avoiding Gallegos' final two years of arbitration. The 31-year-old righty will now hit unrestricted free agency following the 2025 season.

Gallegos has been a crucial member of the Cardinals' bullpen this year. The 2022 campaign marks his second straight season with a sub-3.10 ERA. He ranks behind only closer Ryan Helsley with this 3.05 ERA and 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Manager Oliver Marmol will lean heavily on the 31-year-old in October. He's consistently throw in the highest-leverage non-save situations down the stretch, notching a total of 12 holds in 2022.

Gallegos and his squad open up their march to the 2022 World Series on Friday, Oct. 7. As the National League's 3-seed, they'll play all three of this opening Wild Card series at home. For now, the Cardinals hold +1700 odds to win the World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
