The St. Louis Cardinals are on pace for their worst finish since the 2007 campaign. St. Louis sits 10.5 games back in the NL Central division and the 2021 campaign seems all but lost with their 55-56 overall record.
Grabbing the final NL Wild Card spot, which they trail by 8.0 games in the standings, seems like the only postseason hope for the Cards'. But, St. Louis got some crushing news on Monday after it was announced starter pitcher Kwang-Hyun Kim is heading to the 10-day injured list.
Kwang-Hyun Kim Injury
Kim pitched on Aug. 7, marking his second straight start of immense struggles. In fact, the two-year MLB veteran pitched just a combined 6.2 innings over his last two starts while surrendering seven earned runs.
Since coming over from the Korean KBO League, Kim has been nothing but dominant in the MLB. Over the past two years, the lefty has pitched to a 2.84 ERA across 26 starts and 130.0 innings.
Regardless, this is a blow to a pitching staff struggling with health. Fellow starters Jack Flaherty and Carlos Martinez have been out injured since May 31 and July 4, respectively. Flaherty is hopeful to return soon while Martinez looks to be done for the year. If there's anywhere to point for the Cardinals' struggles in 2021, it's the health of the pitching staff.
