Cam Newton Fantasy Football Outlook After Leaving Third Preseason Game With Injury
By Dan Israeli

In what is typically referred to as the dress rehearsal game of the preseason, Cam Newton came up hobbled in the Panthers' 10-3 loss to the Patriots in Week 3, sustaining a left foot injury after being sacked for the second time on the evening.

Newton was seen leaving the stadium in a walking boot, although early indications are that the injury is not serious and that his removal from the game was mostly precautionary. Newton finished the night going 4-6 for 30 passing yards, including a nice 13-yard strike to fantasy breakout candidate Curtis Samuel.
While Newton will now do everything in his power to get ready for Week 1, when the Panthers host the Rams, the injury is a bit concerning considering how Cam's season ended last year. Newton was shutdown for the Panthers' last two games with a shoulder injury that required offseason surgery.
#CamNewton in a walking boot. No crutches. By video, I did not see a major left foot injury. Often boot is precautionary for swelling overnight, especially when there is a flight home. No reason to panic with 2.5 weeks to opening game. https://t.co/7MtmgLP3F4

For those who have yet to draft, the injury will definitely put a damper on Newton's fantasy stock, even if his Week 1 outlook remains positive. Newton is one of the bigger injury risks at QB, considering his reckless style of play and recent injury history.
Having said that, if Newton does fall in your draft, he could represent a great value. Few quarterbacks carry his upside to finish top five at the position, and before the injury, Newton was receiving praise in camp for rediscovering his deep ball. With Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore and the aforementioned Samuel in the fold, Newton has weapons tailor-made for his skillset.
If you do take a chance on Cam, make sure to draft a capable second QB as well. Pairing Newton with guys like Jared Goff, Lamar Jackson, or Jameis Winston, all going much later, according to average draft position (ADP), makes a lot of sense considering Cam's elevated risk level this season.
