Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season brings us our first real dose of extreme weather conditions, which threaten to shake up plenty of matchups. That includes the crucial AFC East matchup between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots.
When we're talking about extreme weather in Buffalo we're usually looking at cold and snow, but today it's heavy winds that will play a role instead.
The Bills' high-octane offense has featured plenty of deep balls from Josh Allen, who ranks 14th in the NFL with an 8.4-yard average depth of target (aDOT). Expect him to be forced to settle for checkdowns, with fewer deep balls available for Stefon Diggs (10.6-yard aDOT). The returning John Brown (14.6-yard aDOT) may end up being little more than a decoy.
The one-two punch of Devin Singletary and Zack Moss in the backfield should also see much more work than usual. The Bills have run on just 38.4% of their plays this season (No. 25 in the NFL), and we can expect a much higher percentage in this one.
The Patriots are already running the ball more than almost any other team, with their 49.2% run play percentage ranking No. 3 in the NFL. Cam Newton has already been working mostly underneath (27th among 32 qualifying passers with a 6.9-yard aDOT), and an injury-depleted receiving corps certainly won't help him push the ball downfield in this wind.
In a situation this extreme, who knows what we'll see from the ever-creative Bill Belichick. Don't rule out a 1940's throwback with Newton running the single-wing offense.
On FanDuel Sportsbook, the over/under in this game has fallen to just 40.5 total points. That is Week 8's lowest mark.
