The Denver Broncos are taking a serious and wide-ranging approach with their search for a new head coach after getting it so wrong that offseason with Nathaniel Hackett, who didn't even make it through a full season before being fired.

While the Broncos have a ton of names on their interview list, one name stands above the rest – Sean Payton. The former Saints and Super Bowl-winning coach is appears to be strongly considering a return to coaching, although anyone who hires him will have to "trade" for him. Payton remains under contract with the Saints after his retirement.

Payton is reportedly interested in becoming the Broncos' next head coach, at least to a degree. He likes the franchise's new ownership and would be happy to work with quarterback Russell Wilson, who is coming off the worst season of his career.

The Broncos won't be the only team interested in Payton's services, though. All things equal, Payton would probably be the No. 1 name on most teams' list.

If Payton agrees to becomes the Broncos head coach, he will face an uphill battle in the short and long-term, entering a division that includes both Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, along with plenty of other talent.

Additionally, a Broncos team that just went 5-12 does not own a first or second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but does have two third-round picks.
