Broncos Eyeing Several Free Agents as Ja'Wuan James Replacements
The Denver Broncos were dealt a huge blow this offseason as projected starting right tackle Ja'Wuan James tore his Achilles. James played in just three games for Denver in 2019 and opted out of the 2020 campaign, so his anticipated return will have to be put on hold even longer.
However, Denver has moved quickly to line up possible replacements.
The Broncos hosted offensive tackle Ryan Pope for a workout on Tuesday. The 6-foot-7 OT spent most of his time with the Green Bay Packers last season on the practice squad. It sounds like Pope is close to signing, but he hasn't played a snap in the NFL yet, so he'll likely be a depth addition.
Experienced tackles Dennis Kelly, Cam Fleming and Bobby Massie could turn out to be James' replacement if one impresses at their upcoming workout. Kelly started all 16 games for the Tennessee Titans at right tackle last season, recording just two penalties across 1,049 snaps.
Fleming started all 16 games for the New York Giants at right tackle in 2020, but he was responsible for seven penalties and six sacks across 913 snaps.
Massie has been a consistent starter across his nine-year career. He's started in 110 of his 118 career games and recorded a solid 72.6 ProFootballFocus grade during his eight appearances in 2020.
The James injury certainly stings, but Denver at least has some serviceable options left on the market to fill that void.
