The Milwaukee Brewers cruised in the month of April behind one of the best rotations in baseball, leading the NL Central at 15-8. However, the month of May brings some tough decisions for Craig Counsell and the front office as as all 30 teams around baseball must cut their active rosters from 28 to 26 players.
Milwaukee announced on Monday they will designate veteran pitcher Jose Urena for assignment in this roster reduction.
MLB Roster Reduction
Urena was somewhat shaky throughout his first month in Milwaukee, pitching a respectable 3.52 ERA but allowing seven hits and five walks in 7.2 innings of work.
Brewers Roster News
Milwaukee's bullpen is arguably the only area of the roster that needs to start improving. The bullpen ranks middle of the pack (14th) with a 3.35 ERA. By contrast, the starting rotation boasts three pitchers with sub-2.60 ERAs and Milwaukee's 3.26 runs allowed per game ranks top six in baseball.
Urena joined Milwaukee as a free agent back in March. The former starting pitcher has eight years of MLB experience and was much more successful kicking off games (4.62 ERA in 619.0 career innings).
The Brewers are off on Monday and begin a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds show Milwaukee as -250 favorites to win the NL Central.
