Brewers Designate Veteran Outfielder for Assignment

A lengthy slump has led from the Milwaukee Brewers being one of the best teams in Major League Baseball to falling 1.5 games back of the final National League Wild Card spot. Clearly, something has to give, which led to the Brewers getting rid of a veteran on Saturday.
The Brewers have announced that they are designated outfielder Lorenzo Cain for assignment. The 36-year-old was on the final year of a five-year, $80 million contract that he signed with Milwaukee back in January 2018.

The writing has been on the wall for Cain throughout the 2022 MLB season. A two-time All-Star, the Valdosta, GA native has only one home run and nine RBIs while slashing .179/.231/.234 in 43 games (145 at-bats).
When asked about the situation, Cain, who reached 10 years of MLB service on Saturday, told reporters that it was a mutual decision between himself and the Brewers. If another team doesn't claim him off waivers, he plans on contemplating whether or not it's time to retire.
"I've definitely been very fortunate and blessed to play as long as I did. If it's the end, I can't really be upset about anything."
- Lorenzo Cain
If this is the end of Cain's career, he has plenty to be proud of. He was an extremely fun player to watch during the prime of his career and went on to record 87 home runs, 454 RBIs, 190 stolen bases and a .283 batting average in 1,171 career games.
Cain was also fortunate enough to be a part of the Kansas City Royals' 2015 World Series-winning roster. Adding that to everything else he's done, it's unlikely that fans will forget about Cain anytime soon.
