Luke Voit's career has been quite the rollercoaster ride. The peak was in 2020, when he led MLB with 22 home runs for the New York Yankees. He was injured for much of 2021, however, and was traded twice in 2022, first to the San Diego Padres and then to the Washington Nationals.

The 32-year-old didn't attract much attention as a free agent this offseason, ultimately signing a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers in the hopes of making the team.

After a strong Spring Training where he slashed .316/,333/.526 with 2 home runs in 14 games, Voit opted out of his minor-league contract on Sunday, enabling him to negotiate with other teams. The Brewers quickly stepped in to avoid losing him, however, signing him on Monday to a one-year deal with a club option for 2024.

Milwaukee already has Rowdy Tellez at first base, but Voit is expected to platoon with him and fill in at designated hitter as well. Voit still seems to have plenty of thump in his bat after matching his career-high with 22 homers last year and driving in 69 runs.

Given Voit's constant injury problems, the Brewers hope that resting him more frequently will help keep him healthy throughout the season. If that strategy works, this deal has the potential to pay off nicely for Milwaukee.
