It took the Cincinnati Bengals everything they had to get by the Tennessee Titans in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs. An AFC Championship matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs is on deck and defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has revealed his plan to stop quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Bengals vs Chiefs
Anarumo kept it quite simple. He reiterated that the Bengals cannot afford to give up touchdowns. Holding the Chiefs to field goals instead is the key here. After all, he knows that Kansas City is going to rack up yards, but making sure those plays don't hurt on the scoreboard is important.
Of course, this isn't the first time the Bengals have been forced to defend a powerful Chiefs' offense this season. Cincinnati overcame a 11-point halftime deficit to beat Kansas City in Week 17 by a score of 34-31. The Chiefs were held to just three possessions over the course of the second half.
Anarumo explained that playing head coach Andy Reid's squad for the second time makes it similar to a divisional matchup. Both teams already have a feel for on another, so putting the offense in good a good position by playing solid defense is crucial. He also described how he planned to do that.
"You do that by playing great red zone defense, taking possessions away from them on takeaways. We have to do that this weekend to give us a chance to be successful."- Cincinnati DC Lou Anarumo
Cincinnati will aim to keep their opponent under 20 points for the third consecutive game on Sunday afternoon. A win gives the Bengals their first Super Bowl appearance since the 1988 NFL season. The Bengals face off against the Chiefs as 7-point road underdogs, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
