The Oakland Athletics (49-39) were hoping to get a reliable bullpen arm in Trevor Rosenthal back late in the year, but that doesn't look like it'll be the case anymore. The veteran's latest injury update comes with bad news as he is set to have hip surgery and miss the rest of the 2021 season.

Trevor Rosenthal Injury Update

This is devastating news as Rosenthal was a major free-agent signing this past offseason. The eight-year pro had been stellar last season posting a 1.90 ERA and 0.85 WHIP across 23.2 innings pitched. Rosenthal was a go-to closer for both the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres converting 11 saves.

Rosenthal has already been sidelined for months after having thoracic outlet surgery back in April. However, he has now suffered a torn labrum and will have to undergo hip surgery to fix the issue. A's manager Bob Melvin said that the right-hander is expected to miss the rest of the season.

It'll go down as a completely lost season for Rosenthal as he is set to hit the free agent market again this winter. The 31-year-old is nowhere near the end of his career, but he can't seem to shake the injury bug ever since having Tommy John surgery in 2017.

There is no timeline set for Rosenthal's return and it is yet to be determined whether or not he will be ready to pitch by spring training in 2022. It'll be interesting to see which team takes a chance on the veteran reliever and signs him to a new deal in the offseason.
