Drew Gilbert made himself known to the baseball world when he was named the 2022 SEC Tournament MVP with the Tennessee Volunteers. The competitive outfielder will now look to find success with the Houston Astros after being selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft.

The Astros are getting a player that simply loves to play baseball. Gilbert is intense when out on the diamond and his ability to hit the cover off the baseball backs up his antics. Not only that, but the 21-year-old can field his position with the best of them. Gilbert's future comes with high upside.

Houston's amateur scouting director Kris Gross isn't overlooking Gilbert in any way, saying the team "views him as a plus defensive center fielder, a table-setter type." That is some high praise from someone that watched four-time All-Star George Springer patrol center field from 2014-2020.

"There’s a lot to like with the bat and the instincts and the leadership. The performance over the last three years we deemed pretty special, and we’re excited to get him in the first round.”

Gilbert slashed .362/.455/.673 across 59 games in 2022. He also racked up 60 runs scored, 21 doubles, 4 triples, 11 home runs, 70 RBI and 4 stolen bases. What may have been most impressive about his junior season was the fact that he walked (33) more than he struck out at the plate (32).

The Houston Astros enter the All-Star break with an impressive 59-32 record and have odds set at +450 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
