Not much has gone wrong for the Houston Astros in 2022, rifling off the American League's best record at 90-50 and sitting a pretty 11.5-games up on the second-place Seattle Mariners.
That's exactly why ace Justin Verlander's 15-day IL placement back at the end of August put a slight dimmer on the organization. Fortunately, Houston's been up to their usual dominant ways in the Cy Young candidate's absence including an 8-3 record.
The news got better and better in Houston on Monday afternoon as insider Chandler Rome reported a very promising injury update on the unquestioned ace of the staff.
Justin Verlander Injury Update
Rome reports that Verlander is now with the team during their three-game road trip against the Detroit Tigers. He was even seen playing catch in right field at Comerica Park.
Verlander's calf injury had nothing to do with his arm, but it's a good sign to see him both traveling and keeping his arm in good shape. The former MVP suffered the injury while covering first base in a game against the Baltimore Orioles.
As Rome points out, Verlander is no stranger to the city of Detroit. He spent the first 13 years of his career pitching at Comerica Park and earned six of his All-Star appearances, his lone MVP and one of his two Cy Young awards during that span.
Even with the brief IL stint, Verlander has a good opportunity to capture his second Cy Young in the last four seasons. The Astros ace ranks second with +100 odds to win the AL Cy Young award on FanDuel Sportsbook, trailing only Dylan Cease at -140.
