The Houston Astros have dominated the New York Yankees in the postseason lately, winning their last four playoff series against them. That trend became even more pronounced this year when the Astros swept the Yankees in the ALCS, taking the series in four straight.

After humiliating New York yet again in October, Houston may have motivated its rival to have a massive offseason.

According to NY Post columnist and MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees could be on the verge of a major spending spree this winter. In addition to re-signing Aaron Judge, they might also look to sign Astros ace Justin Verlander, who will likely opt out of his contract.

Losing Verlander to the Yankees would be a devastating blow to the Astros. He's favored to win his third career Cy Young award after leading MLB with a 1.75 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in 2022. He's also been a key piece of Houston's current dynasty since coming over from the Detroit Tigers and immediately winning a championship in 2017.

Winning another World Series next week might help convince Verlander to stick around. But if Houston falls short, the 39-year-old could decide to jump ship for the Big Apple, where he'll likely get a bigger contract.

The Yankees have been pursuing Verlander for years, so Astros fans can only hope he doesn't finally end up in pinstripes next season. If he does leave, hopefully he delivers one more title before departing. Houston is currently favored at -190 odds to beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds.
