Antonio Senzatela's start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon couldn't have gone any worse. The Colorado Rockies starting pitcher was removed from the contest with what appears to have been a knee injury after making a fielding play near the first base line.

The Athletic's Katie Woo reports that Senzatela needed help to get off the field, adding that the incident reminded her of when Steven Matz tore his MCL just last month. Further testing will reveal just how much time the 27-year-old could miss.

Antonio Senzatela Injury News

If it is an MCL tear, recovery time varies. If he doesn't require surgery, an MCL tear could heal anywhere from a few weeks to about two months. If Senzatela does have to go under the knife, though, he could be sidelined for anywhere up to a year.

Senzatela's injury made an already bad start that much worse. Before his exit, the Venezuelan hurler had given up five runs on two hits after pitching just 1.2 innings. Things didn't get much better after Austin Gomber replaced him, giving up five runs on three hits, including a Grand Slam to Albert Pujols. — the 690th home run of his career.

Nevertheless, if Senzatela is expected to miss some time, it might be wise for the Rockies to shut him down for the year. He's 3-6 with a 4.67 ERA through 18 starts and with Colorado likely missing the playoffs, there's no reason to rush him back to the mound.
