The Los Angeles Angels have seen infielders drop like flies this season and it has finally caused the front office to look outside the organization for some help. The team has reportedly brought in veteran free agent Jonathan Villar, who was released by the Chicago Cubs near the end of June.

The Angels lost third baseman Anthony Rendon to a season-ending wrist injury and won't see shortstop David Fletcher back for another few weeks. A combination of players like Matt Duffy, Luis Rengifo and Tyler Wade have been since employed at the infield positions with little to no success.

In fact, none of those three players have posted an on-base percentage above .310 in 2022. Adding Villar gives manager Phil Nevin some much-needed flexibility and a player he knows can change the game with his speed. The 31-year-old has racked up an impressive 238 career stolen bases.

Villar's efforts at the plate could certainly use some work (.222/.271/.327 in 2022). However, he has experience playing at every infield spot and smacked 18 home runs during the 2021 season. If he can tap back into that power, the Angels would have a reliable bat to slide into the bottom of the lineup.

For now, LA sits 5.0 games back of the final AL Wild Card spot with a 37-42 record. Expect them to be an underrated buyer at the MLB trade deadline. The Angels currently have odds set at +7500 to win their first World Series title since 2002, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
