Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Ali Marpet shocked many around the league on Sunday by announcing his retirement from the NFL. Marpet will now ride off into the sunset following a Pro Bowl season and with a Super Bowl ring from the 2020 campaign.

Though Marpet's sudden departure creates a hole on the Bucs' offensive line, it also gives them some additional money to spend in free agency.
Buccaneers Cap Space 2022
Tampa Bay is currently projected have $6.8 million in cap space ahead of free agency, according to Spotrac. Marpet's retirement, though, gives the Bucs an additional $10 million if processed as a post-June 1 move.
This is due to the Pro Bowler being scheduled for a base salary of $10 million in 2022, which will now be wiped off of the books.
That additional cash is a huge boost to Tampa Bay's pockets at the perfect time. Several key members from the Super Bowl-winning squad are slated to hit the open market in free agency, including fellow offensive linemen Ryan Jensen and Alex Cappa.
This additional spending budget sets the Bucs up to make a run at retaining both Jensen and Cappa, who were considered serious flight risks given the team's previous cap outlook. There's no denying the extra $10 million could also go toward keeping star wideout Chris Godwin in town.
Marpet's absence will certainly be felt after starting 101 games on the O-line since being draft in 2015. However, the Bucs getting more spending room with free agency right around the corner is a massive silver lining.
