The Detroit Tigers have gotten off to a modest start to the 2022 MLB season, going 4-5 in their first nine contests. Unfortunately, the Tigers have been battling with injuries affecting their starting rotation when it comes to the duo of Matt Manning and Casey Mize.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch had updates on both players Tuesday morning. Although the injury situation is less than ideal, Manning and Mize's outlook seems to be promising.

Matt Manning Injury Update

Hinch told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday morning that Manning (shoulder) had his first injury diagnosis and that the result came back as being "positive" news. The club believes that he's only dealing with shoulder inflammation, however, how much time he'll miss is anyone's guess.

Manning's injury occurred during Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals after he allowed five hits and a run during just 2.0 innings pitched. Hinch said that the righty "didn't look quite right" and that removing him from the game as a precaution.

Manning is one of the Tigers' brightest young pitchers and it isn't a shock to see them being cautious with him. The former 2016 first-rounder has pitched to a 2.25 ERA and 0.750 WHIP with four strikeouts over 8.0 IP so far this season, leaving time to tell if he can pick up from that when he returns.

Casey Mize Injury Update

Mize (elbow) has been out of Detroit's rotation ever since the club placed him on the 10-day injured list back on Saturday. Like Manning, his absence was listed as being precautionary as well, however, the latest injury update has provided Tigers fans with optimism.

Hinch also told MLB Network Radio that, according to doctors, Mize managed to avoid any "catastrophic" damage to his elbow. More tests need to be done, but it certainly seems as if the Tigers avoided the worst-case scenario.

Mize was one of the bright spots in the Tigers' 2021 campaign, going 7-9 in 30 starts with a 3.71 ERA and 1.137 WHIP while striking out 118 batters in 150.1 IP. He hasn't looked like the same pitcher yet this year (5.40 ERA, 3.6 strikeouts per 9 IP), so the hope is that he can bounce back whenever he returns.
