The San Diego Padres' signing of Manny Machado should mean that the team is in win-now mode. But if you look at the Padres' roster, there are a few glaring weaknesses – the lack of a true ace and inexperience in their starting pitching rotation.

While San Diego has lots of young pitching talent, only the team's projected No. 3 starter, Robbie Erlin, has more than 200 innings pitched in his career. But there is one free agent that could take this team to the next level – Dallas Keuchel.

Keuchel is the perfect fit for the Padres' starting rotation. The 30-year-old is coming off of a down season where he still threw more than 200 innings, posted a 3.74 ERA and led the league in ground-ball rate at 53.7 percent.

The market seems to be thin for Keuchel, despite a career 3.72 ERA, two All-Star appearances and an AL Cy Young Award in 2015. That could be good news for the Padres, as it might just open the door for them to get a piece that would catapult them into contention for the NL pennant

Keuchel would add a veteran presence with All-Star and World Series pedigree, and would be the icing on the cake for an already-strong offseason for the Padres. If San Diego can sign Keuchel, it would be hard not to consider them contenders in 2019.
