One of the biggest moves of the offseason was made by the Los Angeles Rams as they completed a blockbuster deal to acquire quarterback Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions. It looks like San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is also a big fan of his division rival's new QB.
This shouldn't come as a surprise given the 49ers were one of the teams reportedly in contact with the Lions regarding a trade. Shanahan made an appearance on the Flying Coach podcast alongside Rams head coach Sean McVay and explained how he was frustrated when he heard the news.
"Everyone was telling me it was a possibility, and Stafford is the man. I studied him hard coming out of college, and we played against him so we know how good he is."- Kyle Shanahan on Rams Trade for Stafford
It's clear that Shanahan wanted to make a move at quarterback this offseason and he was unable to acquire his first choice. Instead, the 49ers decided to trade up to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and select a dual-threat gunslinger out of North Dakota State in Trey Lance.
Both Shanahan and McVay expressed how shocked they were that a deal got done so fast back in March. The Rams ended up trading Jared Goff, two first-round picks and a third-round pick in exchange for the Po-Bowl QB. They head into the fall with Super Bowl aspirations.
On the other side, San Francisco seems committed to starter Jimmy Garoppolo right now, but everyone knows Lance is waiting in the wings. The 49ers currently have the fourth-best odds to take home the Lombardi Trophy at +1300, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
