The San Francisco 49ers were dealt a brutal injury blow on Sunday when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left Week 13 early with a foot injury. The team then learned Jimmy G will be done for the season because of a broken left foot.
In a case of seemingly perfect timing, the Carolina Panthers revealed Monday they are releasing quarterback Baker Mayfield and he'll hit waivers at some point on Monday afternoon.
Considering the 49ers are down to their third-string quarterback, adding an NFL-proven veteran to take over at QB just makes too much sense. Unfortunately, team insider David Lombardi doesn't believe this is an option.
According to Lombardi, the 49ers are very low on the waiver claim order because of their NFC Championship appearance last year. In fact, they rank 24th of 32 NFL teams. He strong believes another team would claim Mayfield before San Francisco's turn.
Adding Mayfield wouldn't exactly inspire the 49ers fanbase, but he's a better option to Brock Purdy. The 49ers lead the NFC West with an 8-4 mark and watching not only a rookie, but "Mr. Irrelevant" from the 2022 draft, lead them in the playoffs signals an early playoff exit. Mayfield at least owns 4.5 years of experience as a starting quaterback in the NFL and has made two playoffs starts in his career.
Lombardi's statements don't make the Mayfield addition impossible, but just a way to quell the excitement of 49ers fans thinking they've found the perfect solution.
