The Houston Texans will be looking to turn things around in 2021 after finishing with a poor 4-12 record last season. They need to bring in players to build around this offseason and make sure they keep their core intact for years to come.

The free-agent market is full of top-tier players as well as experienced veterans ready to contribute right away, but it is important to sign the ones that fit the team the best.

With that in mind, here are three free agents the Texans should avoid signing.

1. Marvin Jones, WR

One of the key goals for the Texans this offseason is to bring in young players with the potential to shine with the team in the future. While Houston needs to build depth at the wide receiver position, Marvin Jones is an aging veteran that doesn't fit the picture here. Although he racked up 978 yards on 76 receptions and scored 9 touchdowns in 2020, he heads into next season at 31 years old. The Texans are a team that needs to continue rebuilding and there are cheaper and younger options out there to shore up the receiving core than Jones.

2. Kenny Vacarro, S

Much like Jones, Kenny Vacarro would fill a need for the Texans at safety, but he is 30 years old now. He is a reliable starter, but his best playing days are likely behind him and the Houston needs to be looking ahead. They should be looking to pair a young developmental starter alongside Justin Reid. Vacarro has had at least 83 tackles in each of the past two seasons and will be an underrated signing for any NFL team. However, safety is a position the Texans can likely fill through the draft rather than spending money on an experienced player like Vacarro.

3. Sheldon Rankins, DT

The Texans will need to address their issues along the interior defensive line, but that doesn't mean they should go out and sign Sheldon Rankins in free agency. Rankins has been a solid depth piece for the New Orleans Saints for the last five seasons, but he has posted just 3.5 sacks in his last 22 games played. He has also missed eight games due to injury in that span. While he is not as old as the other two players mentioned, Rankins' contract will likely end up being too expensive for the Texans. Houston can use that money saved to sign a couple of younger and cheaper free agents instead.
