The marathon is among the most anticipated events on the Olympic calendar. And as the closing weekend of the Olympic Games in Tokyo wraps up, the women's marathon has a number of competitors in the gold medal hunt, according to women's marathon odds on FanDuel Sportsook.

Three women representing both Kenya and Ethiopia are among the top-seven favorites led by world record holder Brigid Kosgei (+120) and Ruth Chepngetich (+380) of Kenya. Birhane Dibaba of Ethiopia is the favorite for her country. The 27-year-old has run 2:18 on two separate occasions since 2019.

Women's Marathon

Kosgei, 27, set the women's marathon world record (2:14.04) in Chicago in 2019, and won her fourth straight marathon in London in 2020. Kenya teammates Chepngetich and Peres Jepchirchir are world record holders in the half marathon.

Kenya has two gold medals and six total medals thus far in the 2021 Olympic Games, while Ethiopia has won one gold medal and achieved three medals overall.

The USA's hopes for a medal are with Sally Kipyego (+5000) and Molly Seidel (+6000). The Americans lead the Olympic Games with 98 total medals, but are second in gold medals with 31 and trailing China (36).

The race is being run in Sapporo, 500 miles north of Tokyo on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.  The course begins and ends in Odori Park in the center of the city, and travels south through urban areas on a large loop, nearly a half marathon in length. The runners will weave through the campus of Hokkaido University three times.

The women's marathon starts on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 6:00 a.m. in Japan with the men's marathon on Sunday.

Here are the gold medal odds for the leading women in the marathon. There are an additional 26 women competing with odds of +10000.
