Every year in a keeper league you get to retain some of your players from the previous season, allowing you to piece together a dominant dynasty if you land a few of the league's top fantasy producers.
Here are three strategies to keep in mind for your 2020 fantasy football keeper drafts.
Best Fantasy Football Keeper League Strategies
3. Know Your Keeper Settings
This may seem obvious, but it's hard to overstate how important it is to use your league settings to maximize value. Some leagues simply allow you to keep a certain number of players with no penalty, but keeping a player in some other leagues can also cost you a draft pick (sometimes the original pick you used on a player, sometimes higher). This completely changes the strategy, as in the first situation you just want to keep your absolute best players, while in the second there will be some more strategy involved as late-round steals become increasingly important.
2. Know When to Blow it Up
Since keeper leagues extend into the future, your tough decisions still aren't over once you're out of the playoff hunt. Once you know you're not going to be a contender, you should be aggressively looking to make trades that maximize the value in who you can keep. This could mean packaging a couple of productive starters to try and acquire one star from a team that needs some depth, or possibly trading an older star for a younger player that you expect to break out later in the season or even the following year.
1. Overvalue Young Running Backs
The running back position tends to have the most turnover of fantasy stars, and that comes in part because it's a position that rookies and young players are constantly developing as new stars. You don't want to take too many gambles when drafting a keeper roster, but high-upside rookies like Clyde Edwards-Helaire, D'Andre Swift, Jonathan Taylor and J.K. Dobbins all have a real chance at being first-round fantasy picks in 2021. If your league allows you to keep players at their original draft cost, that could make them among the most valuable keeper league fantasy picks in 2020.
