Women's World Cup Betting: USA-Sweden Is a Round-of-16 Heavyweight Bout on Sunday

The USA limped into the knockout stage after two draws. The second draw was a pretty poor effort against a Portugal team ranked 21st in FIFA's rankings. In that one, Portugal hit the post in stoppage time, and if it had gone in, it would've sent the US home.

Now, thanks to the Americans getting second in their group, a date with Sweden in the Round of 16 awaits the USWNT. This is far from ideal, as the Swedes have played well so far in this tournament.

No matter what happens, this will be an interesting match. It will kick off on Sunday, August 6th at 5:00 a.m. ET.

USA vs. Sweden Analysis:

Not many would have expected this matchup to take place so early in the tournament given that it's a clash between the first- and third-ranked teams, per FIFA's rankings.

We got here because the US was unable to win either of its last two matches after winning 13 World Cup games in a row over the last three tournaments. The team did not breeze through the group stage as was expected, and they were an injury-time shot off the post away from being eliminated in the match against Portugal.

It's not all doom and gloom for the US, though, especially when you look at the advanced numbers. They still produced 7.8 expected goals (xG) over their three matches -- per FBRef -- and allowed only 0.7 xG. Even in the last match against Portugal -- a game where their performance has been heavily criticized -- the Americans easily won the xG battle, 2.1-0.4, and technically didn't allow a shot on target.

But this will be as tough of a test as the US has faced in any of the past three World Cups. Sweden played excellently in the group stage, winning all three games. They scored nine goals and conceded only one.

The group they played against was a bit weaker than the one the US had to face, as every other team in Sweden's group had a negative xG differential. Despite that, Sweden's xG differential of +5.4 was worse than the USA's (+7.0).

The key squad news for the US is that Rose Lavelle will be suspended after she picked up a yellow card in each of the last two matches. She deservedly got into the starting lineup in the last match against Portugal, as the team was looking for someone to pull the strings in midfield. Now they will likely go back to Savannah Demelo in that spot, which is how the US set up in the first two matches.

The US is favored in this match -- -176 to advance and +115 on the moneyline -- but it could go either way. Given the recent form of these two sides, it's tough to back the Americans at -176 against a team like Sweden. With that said, oddsmakers are still bullish on the USWNT as the US holds the co-second-best odds to win it all despite likely having to face a very difficult path the rest of the way.

With the US giving up just 0.7 xG through three matches this could be a low-scoring affair. You can bet the US to win 1-0 at +550 or 2-0 at +900 -- both of which seem like solid options.
