WNBA Best Bets

Chicago Sky at Washington Mystics

Sky -4.5 (-110)

Now that the Chicago Sky have their key players settling into their roles, they've quickly become one of the most exciting teams in the WNBA. With an opponent like the Washington Mystics ahead of them, the Sky should be able to take care of business tonight and cover as 4.5-point favorites.

Chicago has become a nightmare for their opposition because of their ability to rebound -- and it's only going to get worse with 2024 third overall pick Kamilla Cardoso finally debuting and working up her minutes. Cardoso has played just two games and averaged a mere 15 minutes, but she's already posting averages of 6.0 points and 5.5 rebounds. That plays to what the Sky do best, which has been rebound.

They currently rank third in the WNBA with 36.9 rebounds per game. Rookie Angel Reese has been the leader in that, ranking 7th in the league at 9.0 rebounds a game. The duo of Reese and Cardoso is going to be a dangerous pairing, one that I don't see the Mystics stopping tonight.

Washington is currently 0-9 this season and seemingly has no answers in sight. The Mystics will be without two of their best players tonight as both Shakira Austin and Brittney Sykes are out of action. With Austin missing, it only spells more trouble for the Mystics inside against the likes of Reese, Cardoso, and Elizabeth Williams.

The Sky don't average a lot of points thus far, sitting at 78.8 per game, but the Mystics rank dead last in scoring at 72.3 per content -- making me feel all the better about the Sky covering tonight. What Chicago does well is keep their games tight, holding opponents to 79.6 points per game. As you'd expect, the Mystics are allowing nearly 10 more than they score, giving up 82.9 points per game.

Plain and simple -- the Sky have the superior team and should take care of business tonight against the winless Mystics.

New York Liberty at Atlanta Dream

Liberty -6.5 (-110)

The New York Liberty have been as advertised this season. Despite picking up two early losses in back-to-back games, they've now won four straight, three of which have been in dominant fashion.

It's goes without saying, but the Liberty have expectations as high as any team in the WNBA, and they're playing to that level of late with Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu leading the way.

Stewart is the reigning MVP and has remained consistent, averaging 19.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks. It's been an all-around showcase by Stewart, who will force former MVP Tina Charles to try to slow her down tonight.

Then there's Ionescu, who is succeeding even with her three-point shot not being there at its usual rate. She's averaging 17.9 points but shooting just 33.8% from beyond the arc. Eventually, the three-ball will start falling more frequently as Ionescu made 44.8% of her threes last season.

Tonight, I like the Liberty to cover as 6.5-point favorites.

The Atlanta Dream have a good roster led by Rhyne Howard, Allisha Gray, and Charles. That said, they're not scoring to the levels of a top-tier team. The Dream rank 10th in the WNBA with 77.1 points per game. New York is tied for second with 86.3 points per game.

While the Dream have some strong wins against teams like the Aces and Wings, they're coming off a brutal loss to the Connecticut Sun -- scoring just 50 points in that game.

The Liberty have upped their game after a slow start to the campaign, and they're just a much better team. New York's net rating is +13.0 while Atlanta's sits at -1.9. I like the Liberty to win by at least seven today.
